Carmen is the new full-length and first narrative ballet by Filipe Portugal, presented as part of the Königsfelden Festival under his artistic direction. This powerful reinterpretation of Bizet’s classic is brought to life by an outstanding ensemble of 14 dancers, accompanied live by six cellists and two percussionists from the CHAARTS Ensemble, under the musical direction of Andreas Fleck.
The score features a compelling fusion of Bizet’s music, newly arranged, and original compositions by Jonathan Keren. The visual world of Carmen is shaped by a striking set design from Antonina Businger and evocative costumes by Claudia Binder.
A contemporary dramaturgy by Gregor Acuña-Pohl reframes the narrative, bringing Carmen into today’s world with fresh resonance and urgency.
